At the event, “Borders in the Ocean: Identity and Otherness in the Italian Navy Ocean Diaries,” we heard from Emilio Cocco (Università degli studi di Teramo, Italy-American University of Rome), co-author of I confini nel mare (2016); Naor Ben-Yehoyada (Columbia University); and Konstantina Zanou (Columbia University). The event featured a discussion about the Italian Navy's role in building Italian perceptions of nationhood and their "other" abroad.
The Cold War Archives Research (CWAR) program was thrilled to have an outstanding showing at the 2018 Annual Convention of the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (ASEEES). Professor Victoria Phillips, who leads the CWAR program, and CWAR Fellows Tinatin Japaridze and Sarah Roth presented their papers in a panel "Transcending Bodies, Crossing Diplomatic Borders: Launching Cold War Ideology with the Unheard, Unseen, and Undone".
On November 30th, 2018, the European Institute hosted a one day conference "Two Hegemonic Restructuring Projects in Diachronic Perspective: America's Marshall Plan (1948-1951) and China's Belt and Road Initiative (2013-)".

The fellowship gives students the opportunity to conduct archival research on the cultural history of the Cold War and develop original research papers based on their findings.
