Introduction: Carl Wennerlind, Barnard College

What do fairy tales recited in the aristocratic salons of the Old Regime have to do with the origins of modern political economy? Quite a lot, it turns out. In this talk, David Bell will reevaluate a famous debate about the salons, and show their intimate connection to a key current of Enlightenment thought.
