The Ascaro - An Eritrean Story of Italian Colonialism

February 23, 2024
12:00 PM - 1:30 PM
America/New_York
Online Event

Italian colonialism has rarely been narrated through the eyes of the colonized. The heartbreaking novel by Eritrean intellectual Gäbräyäsus Haylu ሓደ ዛንታ/Hade zanta (written in 1927 in Tigrinya language, and translated only recently into English and Italian) is one such instance.

In this event, Uoldelul Chelati Dirar (University of Macerata) discusses with Nicola Camilleri (Italian Academy, Columbia University) his translation into Italian of the novel (Naples, Tamu, 2023).

The event is moderated by Konstantina Zanou (Columbia University)

This online event is part of the Italian and Mediterranean Colloquia, and is co-sponsored by the Italian Department, the European Institute, and the Italian Academy for Advanced Studies in America.
